Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours? I became an artist at an early age for the same reason that I’m an artist today: to connect. Like so many people, I crave deep and meaningful connections, but it’s been a challenge for me to open up enough to make them. Anyone who has ever experienced this knows it can be very frustrating and lonely.
When I began making art, I felt empowered to open up about my life and my emotions. My hopes, dreams, worries, and fears are all written in the images I create. I approach each subject with candor, integrity, and occasionally humor creating art that speaks to my audience as if they were my dearest friend. This sparks joy in the deepest parts of my heart. My work has built a bridge where there used to be a divide, and it has brought me closer to understanding myself and to knowing others.
Please tell us about your art. My work is a conversation between two friends, you and I. We talk about topics ranging from our personal aspirations to what’s happening in the news; all things we think about as we go through our daily lives. I create pieces that are meant to remind us of our goodness and others that are meant to inspire hope, confidence, and joy. When I’m struggling with pain or sadness, I talk about those things too because life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, as much as I’d like it to be. Regardless of the topic, my work is a genuine look into my heart and a reflection of who I am.
My messages are built using colors, symbols, and carefully chosen words. If you like or understand what I’m saying, then we’ve connected. This personal connection is what I’ve always been seeking through art. It draws into my life other like minded souls who love and care about the same things I do. It creates a place where someone like you and me can belong.
As far as the style of work, I would call it modern pop art. I create pen and ink drawings, as well as acrylic and oil paintings. I also use mixed media elements like gold leaf, resin, and Swarovski crystals. I’m heavily inspired by my upbringing in Hawaii, Japanese art and design, and pop culture.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art? I think the role of the artist has and always will be to draw attention to things that matter. It’s important when you have a voice to use it to make the world a better place. Otherwise, what’s the point?
